Design a PDF Template in a Claude Conversation

7 min read Last updated: October 2026

You can design a PDF template with Claude right inside the chat window. Describe the layout, let Claude write the HTML and save it through the DocuQueue MCP server, then preview the result before anything renders. Create a PDF template with AI in a single conversation, refine it, and download the PDF.

TL;DR: Connect the DocuQueue MCP server, describe the template in chat, preview the HTML, approve the design, and download the PDF. The whole loop happens inside one Claude conversation.

Overview

How does template design in a conversation work?

You talk, Claude builds, the MCP server saves. No editor, no canvas, no dragging boxes around.

MCP template design flips the usual workflow. Instead of learning a drag-and-drop tool, you describe the document and Claude does the layout work: it writes the HTML with variables, calls create_template, and the design lands in your DocuQueue account. Preview it, revise it in plain English, approve it, and the PDF renders. That is how you create a PDF template with AI without leaving the conversation.

Before you start:

This walkthrough assumes the DocuQueue MCP server is connected to Claude, so if you have not set it up yet, follow our guide to generating PDFs with Claude first.

New to DocuQueue? The MCP page shows the connector in action, and our MCP benchmark measures how it holds up across a task suite. If you would rather start from an existing design, the free gift voucher generator produces a voucher you can hand straight to Claude to restyle.

Walkthrough

Design your template in four steps

A real session, tool calls and all. Copy the flow and it works the same way in your account.

01

Connect the DocuQueue MCP server to Claude

Add the DocuQueue MCP server to Claude Desktop or Claude Code, then restart the client. The full walkthrough is in our guide to generating PDFs with Claude.

Once the tools show up, you are ready to design. Nothing else installs on your machine, and the same conversation works in either client.

02

Describe your template in chat

Tell Claude what the document should look like in plain English. Claude calls create_template with the layout as HTML and {{variable}} placeholders, then saves the result in your DocuQueue account.

03

Preview and refine

Claude calls preview_template with sample data and shows the rendered HTML right in the conversation. Preview is HTML, not a PDF, so you can iterate until the design is right.

Generate the PDF

When you approve the design, Claude calls fill_template with confirm set to true, checks get_status until the job completes, and hands you the link from download_pdf.

MCP tools used in this walkthrough

Every call Claude makes while designing and generating your template.

These tools live on the DocuQueue MCP server, so the same conversation works in Claude Desktop, Claude Code, or any MCP client. Browse the connector on the MCP page, and read the MCP benchmark if you want measurements before you commit.

Tool What it does
list_templates Browse available document designs.
create_template Design a new document layout.
preview_template See how your document will look.
fill_template Create a document. Preview first, then confirm to generate PDF.
get_status Check if your document is ready.
download_pdf Get your finished document.
Honest detail:

preview_template returns rendered HTML, not a PDF, so previews cost you nothing and never leave a file behind. The PDF appears only after you confirm generation with fill_template.

Example prompts you can copy

Start a template design with one sentence, then steer it from there.

  1. Design a gift voucher with gold accents
Prompt: "Design a gift voucher with gold accents, a {{voucher_code}} placeholder, and an expiry date."

Claude writes the layout, saves it, and previews it with sample values. Want a head start? Our free gift voucher generator makes one you can hand to Claude to restyle.

  2. Make an invoice template with placeholders
Prompt: "Make an invoice template with {{client_name}}, {{invoice_number}}, and {{total}} placeholders, plus a payment terms row."

Claude drafts the table, saves the template, and previews it with a sample client before anything renders.

  3. Redesign my certificate
Prompt: "Redesign my certificate with a border and a signature line."

Paste your current HTML or just describe the certificate. Claude rebuilds the layout and shows you a preview in chat.

  4. Turn this HTML into a template
Prompt: "Turn this HTML into a template with a logo top-left and {{company_name}} in the footer."

Claude swaps fixed text for variables so one design serves every document you generate later.

  5. Generate a filled sample
Prompt: "Generate a filled sample so I can check it."

Claude runs the preview with sample data first. Approve it, and the PDF job starts.

FAQ

Common questions

Can Claude design a PDF template for me?

Yes. You describe the layout in chat, Claude writes the HTML with variables, and the DocuQueue MCP server saves it as a template. Claude then previews it with sample data and generates the PDF only after you approve.

Do I need to use a drag-and-drop editor?

No. Templates are plain HTML with placeholders, so the design happens in the conversation. Claude drafts the markup, you ask for changes in plain English, and the saved template is ready to reuse.

Which MCP tools create and preview templates?

create_template designs a new document layout and returns a template_id. preview_template renders that template with sample data and returns HTML, so you can inspect the result before anything is generated.

Can I preview the template before generating a PDF?

Yes. preview_template returns rendered HTML rather than a PDF, so you can read the layout in chat. fill_template previews first when confirm is false, and generates the PDF only when you set confirm to true.

Can I use Claude Code as well as Claude Desktop?

Yes. Both clients connect to the same DocuQueue MCP server, so the flow is identical: describe the template, preview it, and generate the PDF. Add the server with a config entry in Claude Desktop or a CLI command in Claude Code.

How This Guide Was Created

This guide was written by Arun, who walked the template design flow shown above end to end: create the template, preview it, refine it, then generate and download the PDF. Tool names, parameters, and return values come straight from DocuQueue's MCP server, and the setup steps were verified against the official MCP specification (modelcontextprotocol.io).
